Today’s Mainline and United Churches have a lot of barriers to overcome in order to attract, welcome, and connect newcomers with the gospel of Jesus Christ: poor reputation; little social capital; persistent stereotyping as intolerant, right-wing, boring, and irrelevant. And those barriers are only some of what blocks new people from taking the risk of walking through an intimidating set of church doors on a Sunday morning. Congregations who are serious about being agents of God’s healing love, work hard at being truly hospitable and lowering the anxiety of their guests. They also diligently thwart any temptation their community may have to turn inward and develop an exclusivistic and unfriendly culture which literally repels newcomers at the front door. But being an evangelistic congregation doesn’t stop there. Attractive and hospitable congregations must also provide newcomers real ways to connect with others and to discover their place in God’s work.

Join Rev. Dave Anderson, Lead Pastor of Eagle Ridge United Church in Coquitlam, as we explore what is needed to become an evangelistic congregation in our unique and difficult context
